A Detailed Look at the Noble Numbat release from Ubuntu

On April 25, Canonical, developers responsible for the widely used Linux Distribution, Ubuntu, released the newest Long-term Support (LTS) version of the OS, version 24.04, codenamed “Noble Numbat“.

Specs

From a simple Neofetch command, we can see that the operating system uses the following
  • Kernel Version: 6.8.0-31 Generic
  • Shell version: 5.2.21
  • Desktop Environment: GNOME 46
  • Window Manager: Mutter

As opposed to the specs of the 22.04 LTS version (Jammy Jellyfish) which has the following:

  • Kernel Version: 6.5.0-26 Generic
  • Shell version: 5.1.16
  • Desktop Environment: GNOME 42.9
  • Window Manager: Mutter
There are not many big changes coming to this distro update, since most of the new features in the GNOME Desktop for this update focused on their file explorer, Nautilus.
Some of the notable changes have been talked about by many content creators in the Linux space, so let’s take note of what to look out for:
– There is a new Ubuntu installer when you first boot the ISO file from your flash drive. This UI looks much more user friendly, helping users set up their installation much faster.
– For all the Nautilus features, these are the most notable changes:
    – Application performance has been improved
    – Searching has been made easier, because now you can click on the URL bar to type the file path of the file or directory you are looking for instead of clicking CTRL+L
    – Global File Search feature is seen in the interface
    – File transfer UI was moved to the sidebar
– Settings categorization has been improved
Overall, as a release, Ubuntu 24.04 is a very solid, however there are not many changes to the overall experience of the distro other than the small changes to Snap packages. This distribution is still worth checking out if you are new to Linux, and trying out the Ubuntu spins like Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Lubuntu are still worth looking at, if you prefer to use a different desktop environment.
