This is a significant victory for the anti-cybercrime campaign.
A botnet estimated to be one of the largest ever has infected millions of devices and has been taken down as part of an international operation coordinated worldwide. Said to have been linked to several malicious activities from DDoS attacks, spam campaigns, and malware distribution, the botnet is estimated to have been infecting millions of devices.
What characterized this FBI-led operation was a highly complex investigation that cut across more than one country. Through the investigators, control servers through which the botnet was commanded and coordinated to communicate with infected devices were traced and shut down. Also confiscated were the digital assets of the individuals responsible for the creation and operations of the botnet.
This botnet, commonly referred to as “S5,” was estimated to infect more than 1.9 million devices across the globe and reported that it was used in launching a range of attacks, including DDoS attacks against critical infrastructure and businesses, besides spam campaigns targeting specific persons and organizations. There were additional reports of malware dissemination from the botnet, which can help the malware in pilfering personal information, destroying devices, and disrupting operations.
It has been another big dent in the legs of cybercriminals as botnets are a prime source of sustaining their malicious activities. The takedown of S5 hasn’t only halted the botnet’s malicious operations but also deprived it of further attacks and made it difficult for cybercrime perpetrators to execute their criminous activities.
However, this is only one step toward the long war against cybercrime. New botnets are being produced every day, and vigilance and appropriate self-protection measures need to be undertaken in order not to become a victim.
Protect Yourself from Botnets
To protect yourself from botnet attacks, it is important to follow these best practices:
Keep your software up to date: Regularly install security patches and updates for your operating system, web browser, and other software.
Use strong passwords: Create very complex unique passwords for all your online accounts.
Avoid suspicious-looking emails and links: Refrain from clicking on the links and attachments of any suspicious email.
Use real antivirus and malware protection: Malware attacks have to be prevented on devices by ensuring that they have the right security system.
More ways to stay safe:
- Avoid clicking suspicious links and downloading attachments from unknown sources.
- Always update your software with the latest security patches.
- Use the firewall to safeguard your network against unapproved access.
- Be wary of social engineering scams, for example, phishing attacks.
- Educate yourself on the latest cyber threats.
Then by following the steps above, you will reduce chances of becoming a victim of botnets.
