Fedora 40 – A new release from Red Hat

Fedora 40

Our other stories on Linux:
A few days ago, April 23, 2024, The Fedora Project released Fedora 40, their newest release of the Red Hat based Linux Distribution.
The new version comes with some changes to the GNOME Desktop environment. GNOME has not seen many changes between versions.

Notable Changes

Some of the notable changes in the update to Fedora 40 as seen in a Neofetch command are as follows:
  • Kernel: 6.8.5-301
  • Shell: bash 5.2.26
  • Desktop Environment: GNOME 46
  • Window Manager: Mutter

Comparison

Comparing it to the previous version, Fedora 39, there are only very minimal changes to the core specifications of the distro:
  • Kernel: 6.5.10-300
  • Shell: bash 5.2.15
  • Desktop Environment: GNOME 45.1
  • Window Manager: Mutter

Conclusion

Overall, the changes from GNOME 45 to 46 have seen only minimal changes which can easily be seen in tech reviews across the internet. Fedora 40 is a stable release that basically changes some portions to the GNOME Desktop while changing the wallpaper and adding a watermark to the bottom right portion of your desktop, while updating portions of the underlying systems like the base kernel being used for the release. It may not be an exciting release, but Fedora 40 is still a good distribution to check out as a new user, as the experience has always been enhanced from version to version just like how the developers of the project intended it to be.
